Quantico was formerly called Potomac. As of 2010, the population was 480. It’s bordered on three sides by Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico and by the Potomac River. MCB Quantico is the largest U.S. Marine Corps base, and it’s the site of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, HMX-1 (the presidential helicopter squadron), Officer Candidate School, and The Basic School. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration's training academy, the FBI Academy, the FBI Laboratory, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Command, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations headquarters are also located there on the base.
If you’re moving to Quantico without a place to live, check out The Crossroads Inn. Staying at the inn for a week or two can take off some of the pressure you might be feeling while looking for a place to live. Reservations because of PCS moves can be made six months in advance. Crossroads Inn offers complimentary breakfasts, laundry facilities and a children’s playground. The inn doesn’t allow pets.
Once you’re ready to move out of the Inn and live on-base, on-base Housing Office can be reached at 703-784-2711. Please keep in mind that there is a process involved in renting on base housing that may include wait times.
The other option for housing is to live off-base outside of Quantico. Nearby cities are Dale City, Dumfries, Triangle, Aquia Harbour, and Stafford. “The median home value in Dumfries is $349,300. Dumfries home values have gone up 2.2% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 2.2% within the next year,” Zillowreported.
According to Trulia, the median rent in Dumfries is $1,429, which is about 55 percent higher than the national average. Renters make up more than 42 percent of all households.
If you’ve made a PCS move with the military packing you out, a bonus is not worrying about storing your personal belongings while you’re looking for a place to live. Your household belongings may take longer to get to you, but your items can be stored for you if they arrive while you are still looking for housing.
If you’ve made this as a personal move, chances are you didn’t bring everything with you that you owned in your previous home. If you need to pick up a few items for your new home, Yelp has a list of the "Best 10 Thrift Stores Near Quantico". There's also the usual assortment of Target and Wal-Mart stores in the area as well, so finding your favorite brands of everything shouldn’t be a problem.
If you’re bringing a family pet along with you on this move, the MCB Quantico Veterinary Treatment Facility provides routine care services, by appointment only. They’re open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. As with most veterinary emergency cases, you'd need to go to a full-service civilian veterinary hospital.
All pets living on post must be registered with the veterinary treatment facility upon arrival. Base Housing may limit the number and breed of pets that can live in on-post housing. Contact them for more information.
Make sure you start getting plugged into your new community as soon as you can. MCB Quantico has a Facebook page to follow, including an Events page.
If you have young children that may need care because of your work schedule, be sure to look into the Child and Youth Programs(CYP). The CYP consists of two Child Development Centers (CDC), Family Child Care (FCC), and School-Age Care Programs (SAC). Fees vary based on total family income.
Spouses looking for employment at MCB Quantico may want to check the MCCS Civilian Careers site. It lists worldwide career opportunities within the Marine Corps, which may also be a good place to check if you do a PCS move from Quantico later.
MCCS Civilian Careers includes the Spouse Preference Program, instituted to lessen the adverse impact on the career paths of spouses of Active Duty Service members. The program grants eligible spouses, who are among the best qualified, for certain positions. If you are the spouse of an active duty service member ask them if you qualify for Spouse Preference.
If you’re a fan of military-themed entertainment, you might recognize Quantico from your favorite programs. The FBI Academy in Quantico was the setting of 15 episodes of “The X-Files,” several scenes from Thomas Harris' book The Silence of the Lambs and from the film of the same name. “Mindhunters,” “Quantico,” "Criminal Minds,” and “CSI: Cyber” are also set in Quantico. Lee Child's character, Maj. Jack Reacher, makes numerous references to the area, especially in the novel, The Visitor.
